FAQ: Anti Pick Sealant For Use Within NHS Mental Health Care & Secure Environments

Anti Pick Sealant

Anti Pick is a tamper-resistant, heavy-duty sealant designed for secure environments such as NHS mental health wards, PICUs, CAMHS, and prisons. Unlike standard mastic or silicone, it is resistant to picking, gouging, and chemical damage. The ALS Anti Pick 110 is specifically engineered for high-risk settings and is fully compatible with NHS estates guidance.

NHS mental health facilities face unique safety challenges. Gaps in joints or poor-quality sealants can be tampered with, forming ligature risks or contraband concealment spaces. Anti Pick Sealant prevents this by creating a resilient, tamper-proof seal that supports infection control, dignity, and long-term durability.

In addition to NHS settings, Anti Pick is widely used in prisons, secure care units, youth detention centres, and supported housing. These environments require robust materials to reduce self-harm risk and damage, making tamper-proof sealants essential.

  • Tamper-resistance: Far harder to pick or remove than conventional sealants
  • Durability: Resistant to impact, chemicals, fuel, UV, and cleaning products
  • Elasticity: Remains flexible to accommodate minor structural movement
  • Primerless adhesion: Bonds to most common construction materials, including metals, plastics, glass, and concrete
  • Hygienic: Contains fungicidal and bacterial growth inhibitors to support infection control

It’s applied using a standard caulking gun onto clean, dry joints. Joint depth and width must follow product guidance (e.g. minimum 5mm). It cures at room temperature and becomes tamper-resistant after ~24 hours. ALS Anti Pick 110 requires no primer for most materials and has a 12-month shelf life.

“In older units, patients would sometimes peel away regular silicone sealant. It became a hiding place for small items like paperclips. Once we switched to tamper-resistant sealant, that behaviour stopped.”
– Facilities Manager, NHS Mental Health
“In shared bathrooms, a patient scratched away sealant using a comb. With the anti pick version in place, we’ve had no further incidents.”
– Nurse, Psychiatric Unit
“People notice weaknesses in the environment. Once you reinforce vulnerable areas with anti pick, they usually stop trying.”
– CAMHS Ward Support Staff
