Safe Access Evolution: Access control systems without the faff.
Southern Health NHS Trust considered a range of options before choosing Safe Access Evolution to upscale their existing mechanical locking system to 44 bedrooms across 3 wards at Antelope House. Antelope House consists of four mental health wards comprising of 54 beds in total.
Safe access evolution combines proven electronic locking systems from Simons Voss with a ligature resistant shroud and turn designed, manufactured, and sold as a complete system by Anti-Ligature shop, the experts in ligature resistant products. The system included software and training as well as a service level agreement for ongoing support.
The advantages of the Safe Access Evolution access control system over other access control locking systems was clear. Firstly, because the system can upscale existing mechanical locks, so it does not compromise the fire properties of the doors. In addition, because the system attaches over the existing mechanical lock there was minimal disruption caused during fitting. Indeed, the engineers were able to fit up to six units a day. Also, the customer found the system great value for money in cost comparison with other systems. The Head of Capital projects commented:
“Safe Access Evolution is a straightforward system, adaptable to existing locking mechanisms with minor changes. It is unobtrusive in appearance and easily overridden. Safe access to individual patient rooms, providing security privacy and comfort.”

The system was fitted as a stand-alone system but still worked seamlessly with other systems within the Trust. Since the system was fitted between October and November 2023. The Trust has expressed high levels of satisfaction and no problems have been reported. Patients were comfortable with the system and commented that they felt higher levels of comfort knowing that other patients could not enter their bedrooms using the autolocking latches.
In conclusion, the fitting of the Safe Access Evolution system at Antelope House has proven to be a successful decision, providing enhanced security and privacy for patients while offering operational benefits for staff. The Trust has put in place plans to install the access control system across several other hospital sites.
